My academic expertise encompasses the human-animal-machine nexus in medieval Europe, delving into the intricate entanglements between human and nonhuman creatures across religious, cultural, and jurisprudential spheres. I am also very intrigued by how the Middle Ages continue to haunt our world, cultivating an active interest in medieval immaterial heritage and its appearances in contemporary media like film and video games.
To tackle these research areas, I interweave questions, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies from critical animal studies, posthumanism, historical anthropology, and history of science. My qualitative analyses combine elements of microstoria and narrativism with a contrarian perspective to examine the role of ritual, narrative, and discursive silence in the construction and perpetuation of normative values for humans and other animals.
